The Truancy Officer implements and enforces the Truancy Ordinance and attendance policies for the Education Department.

Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Education Director, the Truancy Officer implements and enforces the Truancy Ordinance and attendance policies for the Education Department. Plans and implements attendance contracts/agreements with students and families. Researches and recommends for purchase supplies and materials to support school attendance measures for all San Felipe students. Track students who become truant. Complete home visits, file petitions with the Tribal Court for students’ truancy, follow up with civil penalties and plans to improve attendance with students and families. Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate school districts, Pueblo Department colleagues, and community members to ensure communication and follow through.

Duites:

  • Prepares reports for the Director and the Education/Interdepartmental Committees regarding attendance rates – current and historical.
  • Coordinates and communicates with associated public and local schools to identify students who are truant and seeks or creates plans for supporting these students.
  • Monitors students who are in jeopardy of becoming habitually truant and follows through to support students’ success.
  • Designs, develops, and implements attendance support services for the Education Department.
  • Proposes, plans and implements attendance services and Attendance Achievement events, and resolves challenges to ensure school attendance and academic success for students.
  • Proposes, plans and implements attendance support services for students in jeopardy of being habitually truant that utilizes cross department programming approaches.
  • Proposes, plans and implements home visits, summer credit recovery, attendance achievement events/activities, and community-wide school attendance support.
  • Proposes, plans, and implements attendance achievement events/activities, and community-wide school attendance support. This includes researching appropriate programs, preparing a budget, coordinating logistics, involving the community, and attending/running the events/activities.
  • As appropriate, connects students (elementary, middle, high school and higher education) to resources on their campus (i.e., tutoring, advising, counseling, etc.)
  • Plan and implements career advising strategies for middle school and high school students.
  • Researches and recommends for purchase supplies and materials to support school attendance.
  • Establishes tracking system to monitor students’ attendance for success and completion.
  • Establishes a tracking system to monitor students and parents given Court penalties.
  • Prepares reports for the Director and the Education Committee regarding participation and success rate of students on attendance contract/agreements.
  • As appropriate, connects students (elementary, middle, and high school) to resources on their campus (i.e., tutoring, advising, financial aid, housing etc.)
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates motivational speakers to consider events for helping students to think about what comes after high school.
  • Serves as tribal liaison to educational institutions as relevant and assigned.
  • As assigned, assist with grant application development that supports attendance support services and college and academic support services efforts.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma/GED required
  • Associates preferred.

Experience/Basic Knowledge:

  • 1-3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Experience with program, personnel, and students’ development.
  • Knowledge of Keres strongly preferred
  • Grant writing and grant administration experience preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer.
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods.
  • Bends and stoops regularly.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement support services programming and attendance programs relevant to tribal needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality with discretion.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to conduct program evaluation.
  • Ability to make recommendations with alternatives.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and show attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population that represents different ages and educational levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, court officials, counselors, and educators.
  • Ability to learn.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and responsiveness.
  • Flexibility, punctuality, and availability is a must.
  • Ability to speak Keres preferred.
  • Understanding of Pueblo cultural and traditional preferred.
