Volunteer Research Assistant – Santa Ana River Mouth Monitoring Project Role Description Orange County Coastkeeper is seeking volunteer research assistants to support the Santa Ana River Mouth Monitoring Project in Newport Beach, CA. This project focuses on protecting the California Least Tern and Western Snowy Plover, two sensitive bird species that rely on the river mouth for nesting and foraging. Increased recreational use, particularly from off-leash dogs, poses a growing threat to these birds and the surrounding habitat. Volunteers will support the project through two key activities: Field monitoring and data collection Observe and document human, dog, and bird activity in the area Record wildlife behaviors, including nesting and feeding patterns Track disturbances to birds from off-leash dogs and other recreational activities Collect water samples to assess water quality impacts Public outreach and education Participate in community engagement events to educate visitors about the importance of protecting the Santa Ana River mouth Share information on responsible recreation and conservation practices Engage with dog owners, beachgoers, and other visitors to promote awareness of the area’s sensitive species Preferred Qualifications Interest in wildlife conservation, environmental science, or public outreach Strong observational skills and attention to detail for data collection Comfortable speaking with the public and sharing conservation messaging Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions Experience in data collection or field research is a plus Ability to work both independently and as part of a team This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conservation science while making a direct impact on preserving critical coastal habitats.
