Why does the job exist? The incumbent of this position is responsible for the protection and management of natural and cultural resources, public safety and law enforcement functions, visitor services, facility management and maintenance at the State Park. The incumbent will have a strong background regarding policy and procedures, and will ensure goals and objectives are met through the supervision of staff specialists responsible for the many park programs which include: all law enforcement programs, public land use and management, administration, human resources, lake safety, law enforcement and boating equipment and tool maintenance, and public relations, while following policy, procedures and regulations established by the applicable federal and state government agencies.
How does it get done? Supervise and oversee the management of the law enforcement operations and maintenance at the State Park, including implementation of day to day operations according to the policies, procedures and standards of care; tracking and implementation of all programs relating to the basic operations and maintenance of the park. Programs include interpretive, trails, reservations, compliance with American Disability Act (ADA), coordinating Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) projects and all maintenance and preventative maintenance programs. Addressing personnel issues and working with other agencies. Ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
Who are the customers? Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, birders, fishermen, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.
Ideal Candidate Bachelor¿s degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management, of which one (1) year must be supervisory experience. A hiring agency may designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of parks and recreation management with experience in Law Enforcement.
The candidate must be able to perform in stressful situations requiring prompt decision making with significant consequences.
The candidate must have excellent communication, organizational skills, and be able to provide outstanding customer service.
The ideal candidate will have extensive boating experience in various weather conditions.
Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management. Employment Requirements Incumbent must submit to and pass an extensive background investigation and the prescribed physical fitness, medical and psychological examinations. Must be a certified Peace Officer. Must be eligible for certification by waiver of previous training in accordance with provisions of Section 29-1-10 NMSA 1978. As a safety sensitive law enforcement position, incumbent will be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
-Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location.
-Moderate to extensive travel in region/statewide area.
-Incumbent is required to live in park housing, if available.
-Weekend and holiday work required.
-Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions This position is a Law Enforcement position and requires the incumbent to be in optimum physical condition. Lifting, bending, standing running, are above average. This position is placed in strenuous situations where physical strength may be necessary to restrain, or stop criminal activity. This position works outdoors 70% of the time and is exposed to machinery, adverse weather conditions, and some travel. This position is also administrative. Physical requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repeated hand, arm and finger motion, climbing, driving, typing, manual and finger dexterity, lifting up to 75 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds, carrying up to 75 pounds. The use of various hand and power tools is required on occasion. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of park work, there is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals and petroleum products. Ability to see at a distance and close-up, see colors and having good depth perception is essential. Ability to hear in quiet and noisy environments, as well as telling where a sound is coming from is essential. Ability to communicate through speech is essential. Shift work is required on weekends, holidays and during events held at the park or at another site. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work, or return to work after normal hours. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is essential.
