UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Laboratory Support Technician, Medical Lab Technician, or Medical Lab Scientist to support the Microbiology Lab! This role will work an evening shift schedule, with rotating weekends and holidays.

In this role, you will join a highly innovative lab with a large, diverse group that allows you to make an impact on life-changing medicine. This lab provides high-volume service to multiple hospitals within the UPMC system and is the core laboratory for the Urban area!

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Scientist's salary starts at $25.74/hour. The Laboratory Support Tech's salary starts at $17.78/hour.

MLS/MLT roles are eligible for a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000!

Responsibilities:
\n
\n - Adheres to all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and personnel policies.
\n - Follows established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample.
\n - Performs qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
\n - Recognizes critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors affecting measurements and results and initiate corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
\n - Processes specimens for analysis. Enters accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information and sample integrity.
\n - Independently performs Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). Performs high-complexity testing only with the oversight of a medical lab scientist or with a review of results by a supervisor or manager.
\n - Meets established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. Recognizes critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follows up according to established protocols.
\n - Performs and documents Quality Control according to established protocols. Informs supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
\n - Operates and maintains equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Performs minor repairs. Uses reagents and supplies cost-effectively; monitosr and maintains an appropriate supply inventory.
\n - Monitors and maintains supplies for functions the position is responsible for; uses materials and reagents cost-effectively.
\n - Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment. Recognizes priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
\n - Follows all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines. Maintains a safe work environment.
\n - Honors confidentiality of patient information. Follows all compliance guidelines.
\n - Assists with the training and orienting of new employees, students and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.

Laboratory Support Technician:
\n
\n - High School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2 years experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) required in a clinical lab, OR
\n - Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
\n - Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification and 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
\n - Successful completion of a 50 week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
\n - B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science OR
\n - Currently enrolled in a MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years college credits required.

Medical Lab Technician:
\n
\n - Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
\n - Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR
\n - Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
\n - Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred.

\n
Medical Lab Scientist:
\n
\n - Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, OR
\n - Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, OR
\n - Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, OR
\n - Prefer 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

\n
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: \n
\n - Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
