Job Description

Darigold in Sunnyside, WA, is looking for a Food Safety Sanitation Manager with at least 10 (ten) years of experience in dairy or other food manufacturing industries, with at least 5 of those years working directly with w sanitation and clean-in-place (CIP) systems. Under the general direction of the Site Director, the Food Safety Sanitation Manager will drive continuous improvement in cleaning/sanitation technologies and outline sequential cleaning practices focused on food safety and efficacy. The Food Safety Sanitation Manager will act as the technical expert for clean-in-place (CIP), clean-out-of-place (COP), cleaning innovations, chemistry of cleaners, and current best practices in sanitation and food safety programs. This position will be responsible for sanitation effectiveness, including assessment of related programs, including GMPs, Master Sanitation, Environmental Monitoring, SSOP development, and Pest Control, as well as the development and delivery of training materials. The individual will be required to work closely with operations, sanitation, EHS, engineering, and quality departments to ensure quality, food safety, and operational expectations are met while preventing sanitation and design-related food safety failures.

  • Ensure Sunnyside plant is compliant with new regulatory and customer food safety requirements.
  • Assist the Quality Manager in conducting annual Food Safety audits.
  • Ensures that modifications to existing production lines or new construction meet hygienic expectations for food safety, regulatory compliance, and sanitation.
  • Project management as it relates to food safety, sanitation and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversees complaint reporting, tracking, and trending.
  • Help plants produce safe, conforming, and compliant products.
  • Audit, review, and assist in the application of HACCP and Risk mitigation principles and practices.
  • Provide food safety and sanitation support for customers and products.
  • Assess compliance and effective application of Darigold food safety and sanitation policies.
  • Provide support in preparation for GFSI and Customer audits.
  • Monitor, maintain, and continuously upgrade sanitation programs to include Food Safety Programs related to sanitation, sanitation FSMA compliance, Environmental Monitoring Programs, Sanitation effectiveness, Pest Control, and GMP compliance standardization.
  • Development, implementation, and training for new food safety and sanitation policies and procedures monitor plant compliance with required food safety and sanitation training and develop new Sanitation and Food Safety Training programs when appropriate.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and auditing operational food safety and sanitation check sheets.
  • Assist in troubleshooting food safety and sanitation issues.
  • Lead and manage the plantwide sanitation program to achieve key performance indicator (KPI) results that support the site and company's strategic objectives, goals, and measures
  • Oversee the facility's Environmental Monitoring Program, including location mapping, corrective actions, cleaning methods, and root cause assessment(s).
  • Maintain plant SSOPs and Master Sanitation Schedule, designing and implementing new SSOPs as required.
  • Supervise, train, and develop sanitation employees.
  • Provide guidance in the development of operations personnel regarding sanitation and food safety
  • Provide direction and support for the daily management and work prioritization of sanitation responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with other departments to define sanitation activities and resources needed to ensure the completion of the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS). Audit the MSS and complete root-cause analysis on identified issues.
  • Under the direction of the Site Director, manage fiscal responsibility to ensure the department spending is consistent with business requirements.
  • Act as plant contact for sanitation chemical vendor to maintain sanitation equipment, monitor chemical effectiveness, verify sanitation systems, and maintain chemical inventories.
  • Ensure that all sanitation and pest control chemistry use follow the product label and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with Corporate Sanitation to validate all CIP systems as required and maintain corrective action and modification lists.
  • Perform routine sanitation inspection and verify efficacy with associated equipment through visual inspection and microbiological testing.
  • Understand the manufacturing process, equipment design, and layout to ensure proper sanitation and efficient production startups.
  • Support and ensure compliance with GFSI, FSMA, FDA, OSHA, and State and Local regulations in the areas of GMP, Sanitation, CIP, Pest Control, Environmental Monitoring, and hygienic design programs.
  • Review Sanitation Program Assessment schedules, findings, corrective actions, and performance. Monitor program achievements and progress; recommend remediation as necessary.
  • Work with the corporate sanitation team to troubleshoot sanitation, food safety, and quality issues at the plant level. Lead the team in identifying and implementing necessary and appropriate corrective measures.
  • Work closely with pest control companies and Sr. Manager of Sanitation to ensure compliance with an interactive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system.
  • Confirm all sanitation and pest control records and compliance with established parameters.
  • Monitor employee practices related to cleanliness, sanitation, and pest control.
  • Oversee sanitation and pest control recordkeeping and documentation to ensure Darigold policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with preparing and following up internal, third party, FDA, and WSDA audits.
    Maintain sanitation KPI reporting, including weekly, monthly, and yearly trends, and use them to drive continuous improvement.
What You Bring:
  • Must have 10+ years of experience in Dairy or other Food processing, with preference given to those with a B.S. Degree in Food/Dairy Science/Microbiology or an associated discipline.
  • 5+ years' experience in dairy or other food processing sanitation and knowledge of CIP systems.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in food manufacturing environment, preferably in plant sanitation.
  • Practical experience in food microbiology and food pathogen control.
  • Experience working in HACCP-controlled food processing systems.
  • Experience in food plant sanitation and cleaning.
Nice to Have's
  • In-depth knowledge of cleaning and sanitation practices in a food facility, preferably a dairy facility.
  • Good understanding of cleaning practices in dry and wet environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to facilitate the implementation of corporate quality systems in a positive and proactive manner.
