What You Will Do

Are you interested in solving challenges related to wildland fire through the application of numerical modeling? The fire modeling team in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has immediate openings for multiple postdoctoral researchers with experience in the fire sciences or related fields including but not limited to forestry, scientific computing, computational fluid dynamics, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, ecology, or a relevant engineering discipline. Successful candidates will work as part of a team developing novel approaches to capturing, evaluating, and quantifying fire behavior, its interactions with its surroundings, and effects. Together with fellow postdocs and researchers, selected candidates will lead the development and application of LANL's HIGRAD/FIRETEC and QUIC-Fire fire modeling software. Los Alamos National Laboratory solves problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns, and enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:



  • Research experience in at least one of the following areas: scientific computing, forestry, atmospheric processes, fire, smoke, hydrology, combustion, environmental science, plant physiology, ecosystem dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, or ecology.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others and work successfully in a team environment.

Education/Experience : A Ph.D. in the natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, computational science, or related STEM discipline, conferred within the past five (5) years, or all Ph.D. requirements completed by commencement of the appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with fire behavior modeling or fire effects modeling
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team
  • Novel ideas for approaches to current challenges in the fire sciences
  • Experience with modeling and analysis of earth system processes
  • Experience with the programming, parallelization, and optimizing of numerical software
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. For more information go to Postdoc Program website at .

This position will report physically onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM. Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.


The Energy & Natural Resources Security group, EES-16, comprises approximately 100 scientists, research technologists, postdocs, students, and scientific guests. The Group combines basic and applied research to develop novel and integrated approaches in support of LANL missions in National Security, Energy Security, and fundamental earth system science. Additional Details
