Job Description

Overview The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Arts & Culture is seeking a skilled and motivated museum professional to serve as Assistant Curator of History at the Albuquerque Museum. This dynamic role is central to developing and showcasing the Museum’s growing history collections and exhibitions. From bringing in new acquisitions to participating in exhibition development, the Assistant Curator of History helps bring extraordinary objects and stories to the public eye. This is an exciting opportunity to explore local, statewide, and regional history in exhibition form. Responsibilities Plan, coordinate and implement a variety of museum exhibition concepts, public programs, scholarly and popular publications and public presentation on behalf of the Museum. Assist and participate with the development of independent projects including exhibitions, lectures, and installations of the permanent collection; coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the public and provide highly responsible and complex staff assistance to higher level management staff. Operations, services and activities of a museum collection program Principles of museum exhibit planning Principles and practices of museum education programs Principles of educational museum program development and implementation Methods and techniques of experiential learning Methods and techniques of historical research Methods and techniques of object preparation for exhibition, transportation, and storage Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers Operational characteristics of equipment and tools relative to assigned area Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations Develop a wide variety of educational museum program Propose and develop exhibition and catalogues and other printed materials Work effectively with staff, community organizations, educational groups and the public Assist with the development of exhibition and catalogues and other printed materials Communicate clearly and concisely Elicit community and organizational support for various museum programs Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations Prepare clear and concise reports Evaluate collection management needs Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in art history, fine/studio Art, history, American studies, cultural studies, or ethnic studies, or related field; and three (3) years of experience working in an arts and culture environment such as museum, educational institution, or community-based organization. One (1) year of supervisory or lead experience is required. Additional Requirements Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
