Job Description Title: Teacher, Music Education, Fine, and Performing Arts (Brass & Woodwind) (Strings) (Percussion) Department: Academic Enrichment & Support
Reports To: Administrative Superior
Job Summary Instructs students in all aspects of instrumental music and music theory. Utilizes a variety of instructional techniques, including individualized instructional methods and the use of diverse materials that are most appropriate for fully developing the social and educational potential of the students through music. Organizes and directs various activities related to the instruction of instrumental music and music theory. Organizes and directs various instrumental groups such as orchestra, concert and/or marching band, stage band, and small ensembles. Utilizes a variety of current instructional strategies and alternative assessment techniques in the delivery of the music education program and evaluation of student progress. Essential Functions All Specialties
Instructs students to achieve at high levels of academic proficiency in music to stimulate individual investigation, to foster creativity, to develop research, reasoning, and communication skills, and increase student self-awareness and self-concept; plans units of work including content, process, and sequence of study.
Instructs students in the various aspects of music education, including history, literature, principles of music theory, ear training, harmony, sight-singing, reading rhythmic patterns, arranging, music composition, and conducting.
Develops and directs performing ensembles; selects and develops musical repertoire according to the skill level of musicians; presents concerts and other musical performances; encourages and arranges for individual student and ensemble participation in District-sponsored and non-District related music festivals.
Assumes responsibility for the care, maintenance, and inventory of instruments, equipment, and supplies used at various locations.
Keeps abreast of developments in the music industry as well as new developments in pedagogy; consults with various music organizations to plan field trips to observe points of interest such as concerts and open rehearsals; arranges for guest artists to lecture and/or perform.
Participates in collaborative planning sessions with academic content area teachers to develop cross-curricular lessons and thematically-based units of study.
Participates in the development and evaluation of new teaching techniques, which are designed for the unique interests and social and educational needs of students.
Participates in the development of individualized and differentiated instructional strategies appropriate for academically gifted students and students with other exceptionalities, which include academic enrichment, artistic/cultural enrichment, independent program options, and acceleration.
Participates in the development of goals and objectives for the music program; ensures that the standards of best practices are adhered to; provides instructional support and guidance to colleagues in the implementation of program activities related to music; makes recommendations for program modifications when appropriate.
Serves as the instructional leader of music for the school by providing expertise in the teaching of music through the lens of the academic content areas.
Maintains classroom discipline.
Maintains attendance, grade, and other required records.
Minimum Requirements For the Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion Specialties Bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
Three years of full-time, paid, professional teaching experience, two of which have involved directing the following: orchestra, marching band, concert band, jazz band, or school choir including experience directing or producing musical and/or vocal stage productions. For the String Specialty
Bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
Three years of full-time, paid, professional teaching experience, two of which have involved directing an orchestra and other ensembles with emphasis on stringed instruments. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of:
All Specialties o the four major disciplines of music education: performance, historical and cultural contexts, critical response, and aesthetic response to teach an effective and balanced program of music education.
- the theory and principles of child growth and development.
- the modern methods, principles and standards-based teaching and learning practices and content of the core music curriculum.
- differentiated instructional models and strategies in music that appropriately address the needs and interests of students of all exceptionalities.
- the appropriate techniques for assessing students' interest, learning levels/styles and progress in music.
Demonstrated ability to :
- teach all strands of the core music curriculum that addresses the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Arts and Humanities Standards.
- demonstrate technical proficiency and musicianship on a major instrument.
- demonstrate proficiency in instrumental and training techniques applicable to small and large ensembles as well as solo instruments.
- demonstrate proficiency in conducting standard instrumental works.
- collaborate with colleagues on the planning and execution of large projects such as concerts, assemblies, and musical theater productions. Develop musical concepts.
- collaborate with colleagues in the preparation and implementation of lesson plans, and thematically-based units of study that correlate with other content areas.
- employ effective classroom management techniques that are effective in the music classroom.
- use the resources of the larger community to enrich the core music curriculum including masterclasses, artists-in-residencies, trips to professional music organizations, and performances for community events.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships.
