University Hospitals is currently accepting applications for our
2025 Summer Nursing Internship Program . The nursing internship is a 10-week, temporary, paid summer position that provides nursing students the opportunity to work with a highly skilled RN preceptor in a supportive learning environment. The program assists the Nursing Intern to improve communication, critical thinking, clinical, and time management skills while increasing self-confidence and
clinical competence.
The
Nurse Intern functions within the registered nurse's scope of practice under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The Nurse Intern provides patient care for individuals and their families, with the goal of assisting individuals in attaining, maintaining, and restoring optimal health. The Nurse Intern implements her/his role through collaboration with the clinical preceptor and/or clinical faculty.
Essential duties include:
- Introduce self to patients and families as a Nurse Intern, explains the role to them, and orients them to the nursing unit.
- Contributes to the nursing process and evidence-based practice in increasingly complex situations in collaboration with the clinical preceptor.
- Demonstrates competence and comfort in the integration and application of patient care to selected patients.
- Identifies concepts of professional socialization and development
- Exhibits accountability for own actions
- Uses a wide variety of technical equipment to meet patient care needs and prescribed medical therapies i.e. stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers, and electronic monitoring devices.
2025 RN Internship FAQ
Qualifications: The 2025University Hospitals Nursing Intern Program is open to nursing students enrolled atCaseWestern Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Hiram College, Kent State University (and Kent regional campuses),University of Mount Union, University of Akron, John Carroll, andUrsuline College.
Education/Expertise: - Entering or currently in their final year of an accredited BSN or ADN Nursing program with a graduation date between December 2025and May 2026.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
- Students who are hired as a Nurse Intern are required to enroll in the corresponding class offered by their school.
Experience & Knowledge: - Thorough knowledge of nursing practice & process.
- Completion of theory and clinical experience in assigned area required with written recommendations from clinical instructors.
Special Skills & Equipment Knowledge: - Ability to assume professional relationship with other healthcare professionals in exchanging information for the well-being of patients and their families.
- Ability to collaborate with patients, families, visitors and nursing staff in developing and implementing nursing care plans.
Required Credentials, Licensure or Certification: BLS certification, issued by the American Heart Association, must be obtained during UH Orientation.
